Between December 2023 and November 2024, the top 50 houseplant species collectively generated over 37.3 million searches in the U.S., reflecting a remarkable 181% growth rate compared to the time span between December 2015 and November 2016. 

Out of this number, Snake Plants (Dracaena trifasciata) alone accounted for 3.1 million searches during this period, representing 8.2% of the total analyzed search volume. This significance underscores its reputation as the quintessential low-maintenance houseplant, appealing to both novice and seasoned plant enthusiasts.

This eye-opening analysis not only highlights the cultural and aesthetic value of houseplants. It also provides an objective reference point for the most sought-after species among U.S. plant owners.

Methodology of the Study

This study aims to provide a data-driven perspective on the popularity of houseplants and the most favored species in the United States.

Over 250 common houseplant species and their common and Latin names were identified. Using Ahrefs, a renowned SEO tool, I retrieved U.S.-only search volumes for each species by analyzing both common and Latin names for the timespan between September 2015 and November 2024 (with forecasts until December 2025).

Only major search terms were considered, while related but indirect terms were excluded. Careful manual review ensured the exclusion of false positives that could distort the data.

The top 50 most searched plants were isolated, collectively representing approximately 80% of all houseplant-related searches between December 2023 and November 2024. These species serve as the focus of this analysis.

This study aims to provide an unbiased, data-founded snapshot of current houseplant trends and insights into trends.

• Functional and beginner-friendly choices: The dominance of low-maintenance plants like the Snake Plant and Pothos points to a growing preference for practicality, especially among novice plant owners.
• Steady favorites: Evergreen species like Snake Plant and Pothos consistently dominated the charts, while more exotic plants like Calathea and Fiddle Leaf Fig saw significant spikes in interest during specific years.
• Social media generational influence: Millennials and Gen Z have been significant drivers of this growth, as shown by the popularity of “aesthetic” plants like Monstera deliciosa on social media.
